PROJECT OVERVIEW
Founded in 1909, IISc is a cornerstone education and research centre in India. Its vibrant and diverse campus is spread over 440 acres of greenery in the city of Bangalore.
The project’s objective is to upgrade the technology of a 750-seater auditorium with AV, Acoustics, and Stage lighting solutions. The auditorium, managed by TATA Group, is known as “JN Tata Auditorium,” named after the giant industrialist Mr. Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata (the founder of IISc).
We embarked on a transformative journey by revamping the area and leveraging our expertise in site assessments and audits. Our team meticulously analyzed the client’s expectations and requirements, leading to the creation of customized schematic design reports. These reports were instrumental in guiding our implementation of cutting-edge, high-end branded products. By integrating these products thoughtfully, we aimed to create a seamless and immersive experience for all audiences.
This revitalization enabled the auditorium to effectively accommodate a diverse range of academic and non-academic activities, meeting the evolving needs of students and faculty alike.
WHAT DID THE CLIENT WANT TO ACHIEVE?
The project involves upgrading technology in existing faculty areas such as auditorium and seminar halls. Despite ongoing maintenance, the auditoriums have not seen technological updates for many years, resulting in outdated and inefficient systems. The focus is on modernizing Audio-Visual equipment, Acoustics, and Stage Lighting to enhance functionality and performance, ensuring these spaces meet current technological standards and operational needs effectively.
SCOPE OF WORK YOUR COMPANY WAS INVOLVED IN
We began with site assessments and audits, which helped us gain a deeper understanding of what was working well for the auditorium and what needed to change.
On thorough examination of the client’s expectation of one-size-fits-all, our team made customized and schematic design reports with high-end brand products considered, which are synced better together and offer a realistic experience to audiences alike. Our solutions are built upon keeping in mind to comply with the industry’s latest technological standards.
Through meticulous planning and execution, we revamped the university’s existing conventional technology and successfully transformed the JN Tata Auditorium into a state-of-the-art facility capable of meeting the diverse needs of academic and non-academic activities.
In summary, we prepared preliminary drawings consisting of single line diagrams, layouts, first-order cost estimates, and bar charts for execution for each of said works, as well as detailed engineering designs and tender purpose drawings.
WHAT KEY CHALLENGES WERE FACED?
Challenge 1 – Regarding acoustics, we’ve observed extensive torn on the stage wall in the auditorium. This degradation can severely affect sound quality and overall acoustic performance.
Challenge 2—Audio reachability at the far end of the sitting audience It is imperative that those seated in the front rows hear the sound at the same level as those seated at the farthest reaches of the auditorium.
Challenge 3 – Due to architectural design, the space can obstruct the view of the full screen, leading to a less-than-optimal viewing experience for audience members in this area.
Challenge 4 – Further Auditoriums are designed to optimize sound quality, which can sometimes conflict with lighting requirements. For example, large sound-absorbing panels or reflective surfaces may affect the distribution of light and create uneven lighting conditions. Many other factors, such as flickering glared lights and non-uniform illumination, can cause discomfort to the audience.
HOW WERE THOSE CHALLENGES RESOLVED?
Addressing Challenge 1 – We have suggested two options for Wall Ceiling – a) 25mm thick compressed fibreglass, b) 6mm thick wooden slats and Stage ceiling – 12.5mm thick perforated gypsum plasterboard backed with 50mm thick 1000GSM polyester wool.
Addressing Challenge 2 – To tackle this challenge, we propose a strategic sound reinforcement system with line array FOH speakers supported by appropriate amplification and signal processing. The selected components meet power handling, sensitivity, impedance, optimal positioning, Height/angle adjustment, Sound balancing, and tuning.
Addressing Challenge 3 – To address the challenge of limited visibility due to a single screen, we installed two 4K/UHD LED video walls. These state-of-the-art displays were strategically positioned in the auditorium’s extreme left and right areas, ensuring optimal viewing angles for attendees seated in the farther corners of the stage.
Addressing Challenge 4—Our solution includes implementing antiglare and energy-saving LED lights that bestow both warm and cool lighting effects. The lighting system is seamlessly integrated with a control system, allowing for easy adjustment based on the specific requirements of different events.

We integrated the latest technology for a better user experience and ensured the proper deployment of the system from design to implementation. Our collaborative efforts played a pivotal role in navigating countless discussions, planning sessions, and execution phases, fostering a culture of teamwork and synergy.
