#44 Bhagwan Birsa Munda Jail Museum”

BUDGET

11 crore INR and above (USD1.48 million and above)

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Birsa Munda Jail is a 180-year-old jail, where Tribal Freedom Fighter and Religious Leader Bhagwan Birsa Munda was detained by the British. The Museum demonstrates how tribals struggled to protect their forests, land rights, and their culture and show their valour and sacrifices, which are vital for nation-building.

The museum acknowledges the heroism of tribal people who struggled against the British. This museum will become a living venue of India’s tribal culture which is full of diversity and depicts the contribution of tribal heroes in the freedom struggle. The museum will play an important role in preserving and promoting tribal culture and history.

We designed a 40-minute narrative show in three exhibits covering the story of Bhagwan Birsa Munda chronologically. The history, tradition, and culture of tribals (in Hindi & English language) are also captured in that time zone. A display is dedicated to Lord Birsa Munda with mixed media murals, projection mapping, animatronics, and holographic projection.

What did the client want to achieve?

The museum’s goal is to become a living venue for India’s tribal culture which is full of diversity, and it depicts the contribution of tribal heroes and heroines in the freedom struggle.

Through a series of immersive shows, exhibit galleries, outdoor exhibits and evening projection mapping show on the jail facade, the museum depicts the story of Bhagwan Birsa Munda and of tribal uprisings in the Chota Nagpur region (now Jharkhand).
Bhagwan Birsa Munda was an Indian tribal freedom fighter, who spearheaded a tribal religious millenarian movement in the Munda belt of west Singhbhum region of Chota Nagpur division of Bengal presidency.

What key challenges were faced?

1. Minimum use of Existing structure for Equipment Hanging Arrangement.
2. Permission for Shooting at various places – Since the Museum is related to Freedom fighter Bhagwan Birsa Munda and other Freedom Fighters and to show there life story on Projection system, every day the team of 250 members has gone to Village area for shooting. We have taken a permission from the Government to shoot at various areas like Khooti Police Station and other areas and the same was the most challenging job to manage such big team.
3. The remote nature of the location compelled us to rigorously follow our shooting timetable, underscored by critical security considerations. This inevitably intensified the time pressures on our production. The video content had to be shot for custom aspect ratios for each projection surface in the museum. Zone 3 features projection on three sides of the gallery, with each side having a unique projection treatment i.e. layered projections on pepper scrim on one side, projection mapping on the second side and projection on motorized roll up screen on the third side.
4. The challenge was to shoot custom live action video content for every projection surface and layer and to integrate it seamlessly to create a unique immersive experience.

How were those challenges resolved?

This project was challenging as we maintained the look of the correction facility with minimum use of the Existing structure for Equipment Hanging Arrangement.

We also directed and produced a film that highlighted the life story of Birsa Munda and how it impacted our Freedom Struggle. Our chief visualizer Mr. Amardeep Behl wanted to relate the originality of the actual tribal area where Birsa Munda was born, went to school, and raised a tribal revolt. The Jharkhand Government gave us good support and Permissions to shoot in villages and at various tribal areas. Filmmaking was a challenging task, therefore we hired Mr. Rajan Khosa (Bollywood Director) who worked very closely with our design team headed by Mr. Amardeep Behl for a world-class movie. The result was highly appreciated by our end customers and the Government of Jharkhand.

Moreover, we have designed and installed mixed media murals, hologram projection, and Animatronics of Bhagwan Birsa Munda. The film of 70-minute duration (Indoor and Outdoor) each on different aspects of Birsa Munda’s life is shown on Multiple Screens using various techniques of Holographic, Front and Rear Projection at three barracks of the old jail now converted into a Museum.

How has your work helped the client?

The museum educates visitors about the struggles and sacrifices of tribal freedom fighters, fostering awareness about their significant role in India’s fight for independence, inspiring pride in their culture and the values for which they laid down their lives.

It helps preserve the rich cultural heritage and history of the tribal communities in Jharkhand, ensuring that their stories are not forgotten.

The museum serves as a valuable resource for researchers and scholars studying tribal history and resistance movements in Jharkhand.

It has a memorial of Bhagwan Birsa Munda, the jail cell, where he is believed to have breathed his last.
Legacy and Recognition: By honoring the tribal freedom fighters, the client contributes to their recognition and ensures that their legacy lives on for future generations.

What are you most proud of in relation to the project?

1. Set Reveal in Zone 1, 2 & 3 with Motorized Screens/Lighting:
The concept of implementing motorized screens and advanced lighting systems in Zones 1, 2, and 3 represents a visionary approach to augmenting the visitor experience. These motorized screens could dynamically unveil historical information or engaging multimedia presentations, immersing visitors in the subject matter.
2. Animatronic of Bhagwan Birsa Munda in Zone 3:
The proposal to introduce an animatronic representation of Bhagwan Birsa Munda in Zone 3 is a remarkable endeavor to breathe life into history. This animatronic figure has the potential to captivate visitors by simulating the gestures, expressions, and perhaps even the voice of Bhagwan Birsa Munda, enabling them to connect with the historical figure on an emotional and educational level.
3. Redesigned Room Where Lord Birsa Munda Took His Last Breath:
The redesign of the room where Lord Birsa Munda took his last breath carries immense cultural and historical significance, requiring a meticulous approach. This undertaking involves preserving the authenticity of the location while enhancing it to offer visitors a profound and respectful experience.
