Project Overview

The Government of Tamil Nadu commissioned an immersive evening multimedia show to transform Valluvar Kottam into a premier cultural destination celebrating the legacy of Thiruvalluvar and the timeless wisdom of the Thirukkural. Designed for residents, students, and domestic and international tourists, the experience uses large-scale projection mapping, synchronized sound, intelligent lighting, and laser effects projected onto the iconic 39-metre stone chariot façade. Presented after dusk, on all days – the show creates a memorable cultural attraction that blends heritage with technology, bringing Tamil literature and values to life while establishing Valluvar Kottam as a landmark evening destination in Chennai.

What did the client want to achieve?

The Valluvar Kottam Sound & Light Multimedia Show was conceived to celebrate the legacy of the immortal poet-saint Thiruvalluvar and introduce the timeless wisdom of the Thirukkural to modern audiences. Revered as the Ulaga Podhumarai (Universal Scripture), the Thirukkural comprises 133 chapters and 1,330 couplets, offering universal ethical and philosophical guidance that has been translated into numerous languages worldwide.

The experience transforms the iconic stone chariot into a vibrant storytelling canvas through projection mapping, immersive sound, intelligent lighting, and laser effects. Striking visuals and narration bring Thiruvalluvar’s life and teachings to life in an engaging and accessible way.

Envisioned by the Government of Tamil Nadu as a landmark cultural attraction, the show establishes Valluvar Kottam as a premier evening destination. By blending heritage with cutting-edge multimedia technology, it offers visitors from India and around the world an unforgettable introduction to Thiruvalluvar, the enduring values of the Thirukkural, and Tamil Nadu’s rich literary heritage.

Scope of work your company was involved in

Projection Mapping: Utilizing large-scale projection mapping to transform the iconic 39-metre stone chariot facade into a dynamic, living storyteller.

Audio & Narration: Implementing synchronized sound and immersive narration to bring Thiruvalluvar’s life story and the ethical philosophy of the Thirukkural to life for modern audiences.

Lighting Design & Execution:

Installing continuous linear LED lighting along the entire outline of the stone chariot to accentuate its architectural features and scale.

Deploying intelligent lighting systems synchronized with the show’s narrative after dusk.

Special Effects: Integrating dynamic laser effects projected onto the chariot facade to enhance the multimedia visual experience.

Content Development: Crafting visuals and narrative themes based on Thiruvalluvar’s legacy and the 1,330 couplets across 133 chapters of the Thirukkural.

What key challenges were faced?

A key challenge was installing lighting fixtures from the base to the crown of the towering stone chariot. The team employed minimally invasive installation techniques, limiting drilling and physical intervention to protect the monument’s structural integrity and historical significance while achieving the desired visual impact.

The projection mapping system was positioned at an optimal distance to ensure seamless coverage of the façade while safeguarding the equipment in a secure operating environment. Projection, lighting, laser, audio, and control systems were fully integrated and synchronized to deliver a reliable, high-quality multimedia experience. Through careful engineering and sensitive execution, the project successfully balanced heritage conservation with modern technology, creating a sustainable and immersive attraction that enhances the cultural significance of Valluvar Kottam.

How were those challenges resolved?

To avoid drilling into or damaging the historic granite structure, technicians used custom clamping mechanisms, weighted bases, and high-tensile tension banding. This held fixtures securely against the stone chariot using friction and localized padded interfaces rather than permanent anchors.
