Project Overview
The Kalapurnam Tirth Projection Mapping Experience is a permanent immersive installation that transforms the temple façade into a dynamic storytelling medium through precision audiovisual engineering. Developed by Knownsense Studios, the installation combines architectural projection mapping, synchronized multimedia, and immersive spatial audio to present two spiritually significant narratives within a single integrated platform.
Created for Kalapurnam Tirth Deolali, the two distinct shows present experiences: one a grand narrative that communicates the life and teachings of Acharya Shri Kalapurnasurishwarji Maharaj Saheb, and the second a musical about 20th Tirthankar Bhagwan Munisuvrat Swami. Both the shows enable visitors to engage with Jain philosophy through contemporary visualization technologies while preserving the sanctity of the temple environment.
The installation was conceived as a permanent experience capable of reliable daily operation, bringing together digital content, architectural integration, precision projection, and synchronized sound into a cohesive presentation.
The project demonstrates how advanced systems integration can respectfully activate sacred architecture, creating an immersive visitor experience without physical intervention to the structure.
What did the client want to achieve?
The client envisioned a permanent immersive experience that would communicate important Jain spiritual narratives in an engaging and accessible format while preserving the religious significance of the temple.
The installation needed to strengthen visitor engagement by presenting philosophical teachings through contemporary audiovisual experiences capable of connecting with audiences across generations. At the same time, the solution had to remain respectful to the devotional environment and integrate seamlessly with the temple architecture.
From a technical perspective, the client required a dependable installation suitable for repeated public presentations, capable of delivering consistent visual quality, synchronized multimedia playback, all-weather-resistant infrastructure & content as the temple is situated near the Western Ghats, and long-term operational stability without introducing permanent changes to the sacred structure.

We delivered the complete creative, technical, and systems integration scope for the installation.
The work included historical research, concept development, scripting, storyboard creation, architectural documentation, digital modelling, animation production, projection engineering, multimedia programming, spatial audio design, installation support, system integration, testing, commissioning, and operational optimization.
A comprehensive digital workflow was established to accurately reproduce the temple façade and generate projection templates aligned to the architecture. This formed the foundation for visual content creation, calibration, and precise projection alignment.
Knownsense Studios also integrated the projection infrastructure, synchronized playback systems, lighting for colourful dynamism, and an immersive audio environment into a unified operational platform. Extensive on-site commissioning and iterative calibration ensured stable synchronization, consistent image quality, and reliable long-term system performance.
What key challenges were faced?
The temple façade presented considerable engineering complexity due to its highly articulated architectural composition. Multiple projecting surfaces, deep recesses, sculptural details, ornamental carvings, and varying surface depths created a projection environment where conventional façade mapping techniques could not deliver accurate results.
Maintaining image continuity across these irregular surfaces required exceptional positional accuracy while preserving the building’s architectural character rather than masking it.
The installation also needed to present two distinct narratives using the same projection surface without compromising visual identity, content quality, or presentation consistency.
As a permanent installation within a religious environment, the project further demanded dependable day-to-day operation, simplified maintenance, a weather-resistant solution, stable multimedia synchronization, and consistent visitor experience across repeated presentations.
How were those challenges resolved?
Knownsense Studios adopted a digital-first engineering methodology centred around accurate architectural reconstruction before content production commenced. The temple façade was documented using approximately 20,000 high-resolution photographs, enabling the creation of a detailed photogrammetric model that accurately represented the geometry of the structure. This digital replica became the reference for projection planning, content development, and calibration workflows.
Projection systems were positioned to maximize coverage while minimizing geometric distortion. Individual outputs were independently corrected, blended, and colour-balanced before being combined into a seamless presentation across the architecture.
Visual content was designed specifically around the architectural geometry, allowing important narrative elements to remain clearly visible despite changes in surface depth and ornamentation. The synchronized playback environment ensured accurate coordination between projection, narration, music, and environmental sound, while extensive onsite testing refined alignment and overall system performance prior to commissioning.
