Project Overview

The Waste Management Awareness Centre, Moradabad is an immersive public education facility designed to transform the way citizens understand waste management and environmental sustainability. Developed by SI for the Moradabad Municipal Corporation, with concept, design, and content by Magical Theatre, the centre combines storytelling, technology, and interactive experiences to make environmental education engaging for visitors of all ages. Rather than functioning as a conventional museum, the centre guides visitors through a carefully curated journey that explores natural resources, responsible consumption, waste segregation, recycling, municipal waste management systems, and sustainable urban living. Using immersive projection environments, LED walls, digital kiosks, interactive games, audio-visual storytelling, and experiential installations, the project simplifies complex environmental concepts into memorable experiences. The experience also celebrates the contribution of sanitation workers, showcases Moradabad’s environmental initiatives, and encourages visitors to become active participants in creating cleaner communities.

What did the client want to achieve?

The Moradabad Municipal Corporation sought to create a landmark public education centre that would increase environmental awareness and encourage responsible waste management practices among citizens. The objective was to move beyond conventional awareness campaigns by developing an engaging, technology-driven experience that could educate children, families, students, and the wider community in an accessible and memorable way.

The client wanted visitors to understand the complete lifecycle of waste—from generation and segregation to recycling and treatment—while appreciating the importance of sustainable living. Equally important was recognising the contribution of sanitation workers, showcasing municipal initiatives, and demonstrating how individual actions can collectively create cleaner and healthier cities. The vision was to inspire behavioural change by combining education, storytelling, and interactive technology within a single immersive destination that would become a long-term centre for environmental learning in Moradabad.

What key challenges were faced?

One of the primary challenges was transforming the highly technical subject of waste management into an engaging and relatable visitor experience. Environmental issues such as waste segregation, recycling systems, pollution, and resource conservation are often perceived as complex or uninteresting, making it difficult to sustain visitor attention across diverse age groups.

Another challenge was presenting multiple themes—including environmental conservation, municipal waste processes, sustainability, sanitation workers, national initiatives, and citizen responsibility—within a single cohesive narrative without overwhelming visitors. The experience also needed to balance educational depth with accessibility so that school children, families, and adults could all benefit equally.

Additionally, the project required integrating a wide range of technologies—including projection systems, LED displays, digital kiosks, interactive games, immersive installations, and audio-visual storytelling—while ensuring they functioned as educational tools rather than isolated attractions. The overall experience had to remain intuitive, immersive, and capable of encouraging genuine behavioural change rather than simply delivering information.

How were those challenges resolved?

The challenges were addressed by adopting an experience-led design approach that combined storytelling, immersive environments, and interactive technology into a seamless visitor journey. Rather than presenting information through static displays, the centre was organised as a sequence of thematic experiences that gradually build understanding—from the importance of natural resources to practical waste management solutions and personal responsibility. Complex concepts were simplified through immersive graphics, projection-based storytelling, digital kiosks, interactive touch displays, educational games, and engaging audio-visual presentations that encouraged participation rather than passive observation. Visitors actively explored waste segregation, recycling, pollution control, and sustainable practices through hands-on experiences, making learning both enjoyable and memorable. To create a stronger emotional connection, the project highlighted the role of sanitation workers, showcased successful environmental initiatives, and concluded with a digital pledge experience where visitors committed to adopting environmentally responsible habits.

How has your work helped the client?

The project has provided the Moradabad Municipal Corporation with a permanent, future-ready platform for environmental education that extends the impact of its waste management initiatives beyond infrastructure and public campaigns. The Education Centre enables the municipality to engage citizens continuously through immersive learning experiences that encourage awareness, participation, and responsible behaviour.

By making environmental education interactive and accessible, the centre helps citizens better understand waste segregation, recycling, sustainability, and the importance of community participation. It also enhances public appreciation for sanitation workers and municipal efforts while reinforcing national initiatives such as the Swachh Bharat Mission.

Beyond education, the project has established Moradabad as a city embracing innovation in public engagement. The Education Centre serves as a flagship civic asset that demonstrates how immersive technology, thoughtful storytelling, and experiential design can strengthen environmental awareness and inspire lasting behavioural change. It stands as a replicable model for other cities seeking innovative approaches to sustainability education and citizen participation.

What are you most proud of about the project?

We are most proud of transforming a traditionally technical and often overlooked subject into an inspiring public experience that connects with visitors emotionally as well as intellectually. Instead of simply communicating information, the Education Centre encourages visitors to reflect on their daily choices, understand their environmental impact, and commit to positive action through immersive storytelling and interactive engagement.

The project successfully demonstrates how creative design, technology, and educational content can work together to inspire real behavioural change. It also gives deserved recognition to sanitation workers and highlights the collective responsibility required to build cleaner and more sustainable communities. Most importantly, the centre has created a lasting civic landmark that will continue educating and inspiring future generations while setting a benchmark for environmental interpretation centres across India.
